For most people, having Home Care
is a good –and realistic–
alternative to Assisted Living.

–The following are common to Home Care and Assisted Living:
*Same level and breadth of care (with the one exception that home health aides cannot administer insulin injections in the home).
*Care is provided by Home Health Aides. Training is the same.
*Care is supervised by Registered Nurses.
*Both have an R.N. on-call 24 hours a day.
*Cost overall is similar (of course individual cases vary).
–Advantages of Home Care:
1. People can retain their privacy.
2. People can live exactly how they want, eat what they want, etc.
3. People can receive their own friends at home, instead of trying to makes new ones.
4. Peace of mind for family, knowing that the R.N. Care Manager will oversee their family member’s well-being.
5. Memory Care can be provided at home.
Disadvantage of home care:
–Probably more expensive in cases where the only need is for brief assistance, such as just to administer medications.
Advantage of Assisted Living:
–No need to deal with house maintenance.
Home Care as a Supplement to Assisted Living:
Sometimes people are already in Assisted Living, and want to stay there rather than move to a nursing home, but their care needs exceed the services available in the assisted living. In these cases, home care services can be provided in the assisted living setting, in order to supplement the services available in the assisted living, and enable the client to stay there! This is a win-win for everyone. The assisted living is happy that their resident is staying, and client is happy to be staying!
