What are the options for senior living?

Do you have a parent or loved one who is in need of a senior living facility or care center? It’s easy to  become overwhelmed when trying to choose the best for someone you love. To help simplify the process, here are some of the most common senior living options along with brief descriptions.

Adult day care centers provide a variety of weekday activities structured to promote health and social well-being. Support may also be available during nights and weekends. Adult day care centers give seniors the opportunity to get out of the home, and receive mental and social stimulation, while giving a break to their full-time caregivers.

Assisted living offers a balance of independence and personal care in a comforting and dignified community atmosphere. Assisted living facilities support daily living activities. They generally consist of individual apartments, and deliver personalized care that is specific to residents’ individual needs.

In-home care provides loved ones with all the safety and care of assisted living or nursing home-level care, with all the comforts of home. Offered by licensed agencies, such as Baywood Home Care, qualified health care services are delivered by home health aides in the client’s home. Helpguide.org provides information to help you determine if home care is right for your loved one.

Memory care or Special Care Units (SCUs) are services for those who have a memory impairment such as dementia. In a community care setting, these services are usually separated in a secure area where residents are safe to freely move about.

Nursing homes are medical care options that provide nursing or convalescent care for those with chronic conditions or short-term rehabilitative conditions following hospitalization.

Residential care homes are private residences where people can  receive assisted care services from live-in caretakers. Daily living assistance with activities such as bathing and dressing are typically provided. Levels of care can vary greatly between homes, with amenities ranging from assisted living services to full-skilled nursing service.

Respite care offers a temporary break to caregivers, enabling residents to stay in a home or community that is sufficient for their needs. This stay generally ranges from a week to a month. Most assisted living and nursing home facilities have a respite program that offers their full range of services to their temporary residents. Respite can also provide a good transition. Often, if residents enjoy their time there, they become full-time residents.

Retirement communities are ideal for individuals and couples looking for relief from the upkeep of their home, or for those who want to downsize and simplify their lives. These communities offer companionship and a close neighborly atmosphere.

Baywood Home Care provides private in-home senior care, enabling seniors to continue living at home rather than move to an assisted living facility or a nursing home. With a mission to enable people to live how and where they want to live, Baywood offers a range of senior care services including 24 hour live-in care, memory care and hourly care. Their service areas include the Minneapolis / St. Paul metro area, and much of south central and southwestern Minnesota.
